Some good news in the midst of a dark year: the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) finally took aggressive measures to shut down unwanted robocalls and texts. Hopefully we’ll all find some relief.
Crack Down on Auto Warranty Robocalls
In July 2022 Loyaan A. Egal, FCC acting chief of the enforcement standards, said the FCC had gathered enough information on specific people and entities involved in the auto warranty scam robocalls that they were able to provide the information US telecom companies needed.
US telecom companies are now forced to stop transmitting calls from these sources. At the time, the FCC discussed holding telecom companies liable for allowing these illegal calls through.
Accountability for Phone Service Providers
In October 2022, the FCC went a step further. They identified seven offending phone carriers and gave them two weeks to crack down on robocallers. Loyaan A. Egal, FCC acting chief of the enforcement standards, said these seven companies have “fallen woefully short” in complying with new regulations designed to control robocalls and texts: Akabis, Cloud 4, Global UC, Horizon Technology Group, Morse Communications, Sharon Telephone Company and SW Arkansas Telecommunications and Technology. The FCC stated that if these companies failed to take effective action against illegal robocallers, compliant phone companies will be required to
block all incoming calls from the offending telecom companies.
Next Steps:
It appears the FCC has taken a new, more forceful stand against illegal robocalls and texts. Let’s hope these efforts continue.
